In a surprising development, a Ukrainian prosecutor told conservative journalist John Solomon that not only do Ukrainian prosecutors have evidence against Democrats in the United States, but they have been trying — unsuccessfully — to reach out to American authorities since last year to deliver the information to authorities in Washington, D.C.
Kostiantyn Kulyk, deputy head of the Prosecutor General’s International Legal Cooperation Department, gives an alarming account of what happened. “We were supposed to share this information during a working trip to the United States,” Kulyk told Solomon. “However, the ambassador blocked us from obtaining a visa. She didn’t explicitly deny our visa, but also didn’t give it to us.”
Solomon goes into some amount of detail about just what the Ukrainians allege to have uncovered. No names are mentioned, but it’s pretty clear that this scandal goes to the very pinnacle of power during 2016, the last full year of Barack Obama’s presidency. In at least one instance, Kulyk alleges, the government exerted pressure to cover up the misdeeds of unnamed Democrats.
This should come as no surprise. Democrats have been accused of corruption in Ukraine in the past. Two officials went as far as to sign sworn statements asserting that their agency tried to influence the 2016 election — in favor of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
In perhaps the most alarming revelation of all, Solomon says Kulyk told him he and his allies fear going to the FBI with the information because of the bureau’s tight connections with the U.S. Embassy, which Solomon accuses of being in on some of the alleged 2016 electoral shenanigans.
This is deeply concerning. For one thing, important U.S. allies need to be able to trust that our law enforcement agencies will do their jobs faithfully. If that is not happening here, the American people need to know. We deserve to know. And perhaps more importantly in the short run, these allegations need immediate investigating. It sounds an awful lot like Trump is right. If these allegations are true, he — and the American people — should be very concerned about foreign interference in our election and now in the impeachment process itself.
