There have been a lot of rumors over the last three years that President Trump is not happy with his Vice President and might even replace Mike Pence on the 2020 ticket.
With many people clamoring to have Nikki Haley setup for a 2024 nomination, stories have found their way into the press – likely leaked by people who want her, or someone else, to get the nod.
But yesterday morning, President Trump called in to Fox and Friends and confirmed that though he likes Haley, his VP in 2020 will continue to be Mike Pence.
“You know what, Mike Pence is a great vice president — he’s our man 100%,” Trump told the Fox anchors. “Nikki will absolutely be involved.”
He was complimentary of Haley, however. “Mike Pence — I’ve seen this rumor that keeps popping up — Nikki would be great, but Mike Pence has done a phenomenal job as vice president. He’s our guy, he’s my friend, and look, we have a great team,” Trump said during the live TV interview.
There are several reasons Trump would never replace Pence. First, Pence has been loyal. There have been times when he could have turned on Trump in order to deliver himself the presidency and he did not.
Secondly, Trump is loyal in return. He tends not to throw his own people under the bus. And finally, Pence is popular with evangelical Christians and helped Trump secure this important voting block in 2016. He is likely to be helpful again in 2020.
