Nancy Pelosi warns Democrats to back off far-left platforms
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is a far-left Democrat from a very liberal California district. So when she tells Democrats to stop moving so far left, that should be big news.
Pelosi just instructed 2020 Democrats to think about swing states — like Michigan — where progressive Democrat ideas might not be so popular. “You must win the Electoral College,” Pelosi warned.
Pelosi is understandably concerned. In an attempt to get to the front of the crowded 2020 Democrat field, many Democrats are pushing ideas that are too-far left for most Americans, including Medicare-for-all, late-term abortion, and student loan forgiveness.
“What works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan,” said the House Speaker. “What works in Michigan works in San Francisco — talking about workers’ rights and sharing prosperity.”
Pelosi is a lot of things. Obviously I don’t agree with her on much. But she didn’t become Speaker of the House by making rookie mistakes. It seems many 2020 Democrats are more concerned with getting to the front of the pack and becoming the nominee than they are with making sure their party can win the general election.
That’s good news for President Donald Trump, who is being attacked all day, every day by Democrats in Congress, entrenched members of the intelligence community with access to information, and the news media.
Democrats learned the hard way in 2016 that running a far-left Democrat is a good way to make the once reliably blue Rust Belt a bastion of Trump conservatism. Their reaction so far in 2020 has been to double-down on that failed policy. Let’s see if it works.
