Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) stunned the media this week when he announced that President Trump was likely to be acquitted by the Senate before his annual address to the nation, known as the State of the Union address, On February 4.
On Sean Hannity’s program, Graham said, “The best thing for the American people is to end this crap as quickly as possible, to have a trial in the Senate, bipartisan acquittal of the president.”
Graham continued, “And on February 4, when when the president comes into the House chamber to deliver the State of the Union, he will have been acquitted by the Senate.”
Graham also addressed Democrats’ request for more witnesses during the Senate trial, pointing out that the House could have called all these witnesses as well, and chose not to do so.
This is not a surprise. Graham previously called impeachment a “crock” and said that he wants the trial to end quickly.
Several Republicans have said that they would be open to calling witnesses, but refused to negotiate with House Democrats directly, affirming that the Senate will call witnesses only on its own terms.
