Attorney General William Barr has expanded an investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation, which eventually led to Robert Mueller’s appointment and subsequent report. That report did not lead to any indictments against President Trump and did not find any evidence that he colluded with Russians to win the 2016 election, as many Democrats had alleged.
The new investigation, which is being run by U.S. Attorney John Durham, is looking into government officials who helped launched the now-defunct counterintelligence investigation, which led to the extraordinary act of spying against people involved in a U.S. political campaign — namely, that of now-President Donald Trump.
Durham is rumored to be interested especially in talking to former CIA Director John Brennan, as well as former director of national intelligence James Clapper, among others.
Few details are known about the investigation or who might eventually be indicted. Bill Barr is running a tight investigation, as is Durham. These guys are experienced law enforcement professionals and typically are not known as ‘leakers,’ unlike many who served under former President Barack Obama.
But one thing is certain: a lot of very powerful Democrats are now very worried. Barr has shown that he will aggressively go after people who abuse their power and target their political enemies with investigations.
Just as politically-motivated investigations have a chilling effect on U.S. politics and discourage good men and women from getting involved in politics, Barr’s investigation could have a chilling effect on Democrats’ future attempts to use the Department of Justice – and their powerful government jobs – to try to overturn the results of U.S. elections.
