Turkey Suspends Its Offensive in Northern Syria
It’s official. Together, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have announced a new suspension of Turkey’s military offensive in Northern Syria.
Pence says that Turkey agreed to suspend its advance. However, the deal is an exchange. Turkey wants the total disarmament and withdrawal of Kurdish militias from its border.
Pence told the following in the middle of a press conference on Thursday:
“Today, the U.S. and Turkey agreed to a ceasefire in Syria. The Turkish side will pause Operation Peace Spring in order to allow for the withdrawal of YPG forces from the safe zone for 120 hours.”
President Trump says that this deal was a huge success, and that it “could NEVER have been made 3 days ago.”
