Former FBI director James Comey shocked Fox viewers on Sunday when he admitted that he was “wrong” about the FBI’s abuse of FISA warrants. He said, “I was overconfident as the director in our procedures. And it’s important that a leader be accountable and transparent.”
Donald Trump wasted no time calling Comey out over the admission, and asked him “where are the apologies to me and others, Jim?”
Fox host Chris Wallace, himself an outspoken Trump critic, went after James Comey in the Sunday interview. Comey was confronted with footage from 2018 in which he claimed that he was totally confident that proper procedure was followed in the process of obtaining FISA warrants to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016.
After Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s investigation found 17 omissions and errors in the applications from Comey’s FBI, Comey was forced to confront his own lies by Wallace.
He admitted that there was “real sloppiness” throughout the process and that he’s “responsible,” before immediately blaming it on “systemic problems.”
Comey’s clumsy attempts at damage control did not go unnoticed by Trump, and he quickly responded in a tweet, “so now Comey’s admitting he was wrong. Wow, but he’s only doing so because he got caught red handed. He was actually caught a long time ago.”
“So what are the consequences for his unlawful conduct. Could it be years in jail?”
