Former Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates was just sentenced to 45 days in jail for charges of false statements and conspiracy against the United States on Tuesday.
Gates was charged by special counsel Robert Mueller for his role in a financial conspiracy with Paul Manafort, and he pleaded guilty in February of 2018.
Breitbart reports, “An indictment accused him and Paul Manafort, his onetime mentor and the chairman of the 2016 Trump campaign, of failing to disclose the work they did for then-Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and of hiding their proceeds from U.S. tax authorities to fund lavish lifestyles and pay for personal expenses.”
Despite the alleged crimes, the former Trump associate was praised by the Obama-appointed district judge Amy Berman Jackson for his “extraordinary” cooperation with investigators.
Jackson said, “Gates’ information alone warranted — indeed, demanded — further investigation from the standpoint of our national security, the integrity of our elections and the enforcement of our criminal laws,” but went on to excoriate him for his years of lies and fraud.
Gates is one of several Trump’s close associates charged as a result of the Mueller investigation, along with Michael Flynn and Roger Stone.
Along with the 45-day jail sentence, Gates has been ordered to pay a $20,000 fine, and complete 300 hours of community service.
