Donald Trump stunned the media by calling out Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his snide remarks regarding Trump’s press conferences during the 2019 NATO Summit.
Trudeau was caught on a hot mic complaining about Trump’s “40-minute press conferences” making people late to meetings. He also made comments about Trump’s penchant for making surprise announcements.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was part of the hot-mic moment, asked Trudeau what made him late. “He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top,” said Trudeau.
Word of Trudeau’s remarks clearly made it to Trump fairly quickly. When asked, Trump commented during a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the NATO summit, “Well, he’s two-faced. And with Trudeau, he’s a nice guy. I find him to be a nice guy, but the truth is, I called him out on the fact that he’s not paying 2%, and I guess he’s not very happy about it.”
“It’s Canada. They have money. And they should be paying 2%. So I called him out on that, and I’m sure he wasn’t happy about that, but that’s the way it is,” Trump continued.
“Look, I’m representing the U.S. and he should be paying more than he’s paying. And he understands it. So I can imagine he’s not that happy. But that’s the way it is.”
In what many see as a final snub to the Canadian leader, Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled post-summit press conference that was to take place before returning to the US on Wednesday. Trump tweeted, “We won’t be doing a press conference at the close of NATO because we did so many over the past two days. Safe travels to all!”
