Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway is completely done with the media focus on her marriage to the prominent Trump critic George Conway.
Conway blew up at a Washington Examiner reporter for dragging her husband’s name and reputation into a story about her possibly being considered to replace Mick Mulvaney as White House chief of staff.
A breaking news reporter for the Examiner, Caitlin Yilek, wrote an article about the swirling rumors about Mulvaney’s replacement. In the report, George Conway’s contentious relationship with Trump was referenced.
After the report was released, an assistant to Kellyanne Conway, Tom Joannou, called the reporter and requested to speak to her without specifying why.
While Joannou asked for the conversation between himself and Yilek to be off the record, Kellyanne swiftly took over the call without specifying that she wanted her conversation to be off the record.
She proceeded to take Yilek to task about referencing Kellyanne’s dilemma of being “in the middle of Trump’s barbs with her husband, George, a conservative lawyer who frequently makes headlines for his criticism of the president.”
Conway confronted Yilek, saying “I just am wondering why in God’s earth you would need to mention anything about George Conway’s tweets in an article that talks about me as possibly being chief of staff.”
She then charged the reporter to not “pull the crap where you’re trying to undercut another woman based on who she’s married to. He gets his power through me, if you haven’t noticed.”
The Examiner released the full audio and transcript of the exchange, arguing that there was no agreement that the conversation was off the record.
