New York City’s “Key to NYC” vaccine passport enforcement will begin this week in the city under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s (D) order, instituted last month to give people time to get the vaccine.
Under the mandate, individuals will need to show proof of at least one dose of a COVID vaccine in order to enter restaurants, gyms, and entertainment venues.
“It’s time for people to see vaccination as literally necessary to living a good and full and healthy life,” de Blasio said when he unveiled the plan.
The order also allows employers to fire fast-food workers who refuse to get vaccinated. Under the rules, customers can be inside the restaurant to use the restroom, to pay a bill or order takeout for up to 10 minutes while wearing a mask, and can be served outside.
Fines start at $1,000 and go up to $5,000 for repeat offenses. The price of freedoms being lost, however, really can’t be quantified.
