The Associated Press is reporting that McDonald’s is temporarily closing all 850 of its restaurants in Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Golden Arches will continue paying 62,000 Russian employees “who have poured their heart and soul into our McDonald’s brand.”
“Our values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempckinski said.
McDonald’s has also closed 108 Ukrainian restaurants, continuing to pay those employees as well.
The closures could represent quite a hit to McDonald’s finances.
Last year, burger sales in Ukraine and Russia accounted for almost 10% of McDonald’s total revenue.
