Former President Barack Obama warned a room of wealthy donors at a Democracy Alliance meeting on Thursday night that Democrat candidates should not be pushing far-left policies because it will make them unelectable in 2020.
“The average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it,” Obama said in what some saw as a rebuke of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s support for a single payer universal health care plan and other far-left ideas.
“Even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision we also have to be rooted in reality,” he said.
Obama has not commented on the Democrat primary up until this point and has not endorsed a candidate even though his former Vice President Joe Biden is running. Biden said previously that he asked Obama not to endorse him.
The former president also said, that enough votes to win the election will not be gained by “certain left-leaning Twitter feeds” or “the activist wing of our party.”
