A White House resignation announcement just dropped. It has been made official, and people are stunned. Everyone in Washington is talking about this unexpected news.
Under pressure from Democrats to resign his post, Labor Secretary Alex Acosta has stood firm and resisted calls to step down. Democrats are trying to score cheap political points by saying he botched the prosecution of billionaire Jeffery Epstein.
Over a decade ago, Ocosta served as the U.S. attorney for Miami and his office vigorously prosecuted Epstein on charges that he sexually abused underage girls. Acosta secured a 13-month sentence on a plea deal, but Democrats are claiming it wasn’t enough.
Ocosta has rightly fired back. “Simply put, the Palm Beach state attorney’s office was ready to let Epstein walk free with no jail time. Nothing. Prosecutors in my former office found this to be completely unacceptable,” he said in a press conference.
It is clear that Ocosta would’ve loved to put Epstein away for much longer, however, the situation became a complicated one legally and this is the best he could do. Ocosta said, “Facts are important, and facts are being overlooked.”
“A good prosecutor will tell you that these cases are complex,” he continued. “These questions are always very difficult because we now have 12 years of knowledge and hindsight.”
