A new Business Investors Daily poll said a head-to-head matchup between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden would leave Biden as the new president by a wide margin, if the election were held today.
Biden has a 12-point edge over Trump in the poll, which involved 848 registered voters. Other Democrat candidates including Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) also edged out Trump by smaller margins in the poll.
Trump’s job approval has dipped slightly over the last few months as the global economy has slowed and caused increased volatility in the U.S. stock market and also lowered bond yields.
Democrat candidates typically poll significantly higher in early polls, but Republican candidates tighten considerably as the election gets closer. Although a breakdown of how many of each party were polled was not available, most polls also oversample Democrats, which further skews the numbers.
The bottom line: the election is far from over, and Trump is likely to do better in the polls the closer it gets to election day.
