President Donald Trump announced Thursday that a U.S. Navy ship destroyed an unmanned Iranian drone when it came within 1000 yards of the ship, the New York Times reported.
The USS Boxer shot the drone down because it was engaging in “threatening behavior” toward the American ambhibious assault ship. It wasn’t known whether the drone was armed.
Trump described the incident as “the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran.” In June, Iran shot down an umanned U.S. drone in an action that nearly resulted in retaliatory U.S. airstrikes.
Iran foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he had no news of an Iranian drone being shot down. Zarif is in the U.S. for a meeting at the U.N.
Iran may be blustering to avoid looking weak to the U.S., but it doesn’t seem to be making any headway with getting sanctions against it removed.
