During a Fox News interview on Iran, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said, “The sanctions are really biting and, month by month, their economy is getting worse and people are getting more and more unhappy.”
“I think they’re lashing out desperately, trying to somehow change the circumstance,” Gingrich continued. As we know, he’s talking about Iran’s recent spate of reckless behavior, such as destroying an unmanned U.S. drone.
The rogue nation has also been implicated in an oil tanker attack on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial commerce route from the Persian Gulf out to the open sea. Clearly, Iran is unstable and unpredictable.
“Be calm, be patient. Just continue to increase the pressure economically and I think they’re very close to breaking. I think this is a very shaky regime,” said Gingrich, offering advice on what to do.
This is exactly what Trump has done, he said, noting that the president was “very wise” to hold off on a military response to Iran. But as Trump has said, the Iranians are “playing with fire” and should be careful.
