Trump took to Twitter on Friday to put social media companies on notice that the private censorship of conservatives won’t be tolerated.
“I am continuing to monitor the censorship of AMERICAN CITIZENS on social media platforms,” Trump wrote.
“This is the United States of America — and we have what’s known as FREEDOM OF SPEECH! We are monitoring and watching, closely!!
The President’s tweet seemed to be a reaction to a story he retweeted earlier that day about Facebook “blacklisting” Paul Joseph Watson, Laura Loomer and other well-known conservatives.
Later the same day, Trump tweeted in support of James Woods, who was locked out of his Twitter account for “abusive behavior.”
However, not everyone on the right is comfortable with Trump’s heavy-handed response, since the First Amendment only protects speech against government censorship, not private censorship.
