President Trump just issued a stunning veto, and Democrats are losing their minds. The situation on Capitol Hill is about to go nuclear.
Trump has vetoed three congressional resolutions pertaining to Saudi Arabia. The politically-motivated resolutions were an attempt to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which Trump called “ill-conceived.”
“This resolution would weaken America’s global competitiveness and damage the important relationships we share with our allies and partners,” Trump said. He then specifically noted how he wants to end the terrible civil war in Yemen.
“But we cannot end it through … resolutions that fail to address its root causes,” he said. “I encourage the Congress to direct its efforts toward supporting our work to achieve peace through a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Yemen.”
Surely, Trump vetoing these resolutions is causing controversy, even within his own party. But it’s important to remember that he is gravely concerned about the balance of power in the Middle East.
He knows that Saudi Arabia has to be approached cautiously, but also knows that Iran must be kept in check. Saudi Arabia is in a position to do that, he Trump is playing to their self-interest. Trump’s critics need to understand his goal.
