President Trump called Democrats’ bluff on a new resolution to release special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia collusion probe report.
After the resolution passed unanimously in the House, Trump mocked the supposed threat to his presidency by taking credit for its passage.
“I told leadership to let all Republicans vote for transparency,” Trump said. “Makes us all look good and doesn’t matter. Play along with the game!”
The resolution, later blocked in the Senate, would require the Justice Department to make the entire report public, excepting any part “expressly prohibited by law.”
Democrats insist this step is necessary because current law gives the Department of Justice full discretion to withhold the report, and because officials are leaning toward keeping the records of unindicted individuals confidential.
However, Trump has insisted the investigation is a witch hunt, and his reaction to the new resolution is consistent with that view.
