Last week two reporters, Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier, broke a story of epic proportions on the Buzzfeed news site. The allegation: President Donald Trump directly and intentionally told his former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress during testimony about the now-defunct Trump Tower project in Moscow.
Were this story true, Donald Trump’s presidency almost certainly would have been in peril just halfway into his term. CNN and MSNBC mentioned impeachment nearly 200 times on Friday.
But Friday evening, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office stunned journalists by coming forward and revealing that the story was false.
Now one of the reporters, Jason Leopold, is under the spotlight. During the George W. Bush administration, Leopold was accused of multiple forms of journalistic malfeasance, ranging from plagiarism, to inaccuracies, to misrepresentations. And in 2006, Leopold reported incorrectly that Karl Rove would soon be indicted in the Valerie Plame affair. Rove was never indicted.
