CNN head Jeff Zucker was accused by some of making an inappropriate joke about female anchor Alisyn Camerota during an awards ceremony Thursday, the Daily Mail reported.
The “New Day” anchor was honored at the Mirror Awards, where Zucker spoke about her, saying, “I was gonna say that I love waking up WITH YOU every morning, but I want to say that I love waking up TO YOU every morning.”
Camerota, who accused former Fox News boss Roger Ailes of sexually harassing her in 2017, denied that the joke was harassment or even tone-deaf. “It’s the oldest joke in the book made to morning show anchors, both men and women,” she told the Daily Mail in a statement. “‘I hear it a couple of times a week from people in the grocery store.”
Zucker’s quote was tweeted by The Hollywood Reporter’s Jeremy Barr, who said that there were groans in the room after the joke was told.
It’s hard not to see this as an example of a double standard between conservative and liberal media sources, although the nature of Ailes’ alleged harassment of Camerota has not been detailed. Somehow, it’s always okay when a Democrat or a leftist does something that a conservative gets raked over the coals for doing.
