President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration would investigate claims by billionaire Paypal founder Peter Thiel that Google’s actions, including affiliating itself with the Chinese military and refusing to renew a Pentagon contract, were “seemingly treasonous.”
Google has been infiltrated by Chinese Intelligence Services, Thiel accused. Trump did not say he believed Thiel but that Thiel was a “top expert” on the subject, the Daily Mail reported.
Trump did not commit to a formal investigation but said the attorney general and federal agencies could take a look at the accusations. “We’ll see if there’s any truth to it. But that’s a very big statement made by somebody who’s highly respected,” he said.
Thiel, a Trump supporter and campaign contributor, made the comments during a speech at the National Conservatism Conference in Washington on Sunday.
