Former Congressman Trey Gowdy has joined the legal team of President Donald Trump to help him fight an impeachment inquiry by House Democrats.
Gowdy’s addition to the Trump legal team was announced on Wednesday. Gowdy was previously a Fox News contributor, and he often denounced impeachment efforts and argued against them.
Most recently, Gowdy said that Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff made himself a “fact witness” in the impeachment inquiry when his office had contact with and advised a Trump whistleblower before he made a complaint against Trump.
Gowdy also said about impeachment, “If there’s a smoking gun there — I can’t even find the gun, whether it’s smoking or not.”
The View co-host Meghan McCain expressed admiration for Gowdy even though she has not always supported the president. “You can laugh all you want, but the fact he’s joining Trump’s team is good news for Trump, and bad news for Democrats,” McCain said.
