Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC)’s wife of almost 60 years, Emily Clyburn, has died at the age of 80. No cause of death was given.
Clyburn was a civil rights activist in the 1960s. She later became a public school librarian, and also spent three decades as a medical librarian for Charleston Naval Base and Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.
Rep. Clyburn credits his wife for pushing him to run for office in the early 1970s, and for telling him, “When you win, brag gently. When you lose, weep softly.”
“Emily Clyburn was a champion of equality and opportunity who made a difference for countless young people in her beloved South Carolina,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement.
She is survived by three daughters and four grandchildren, in addition to her husband.
