Democrat Washington state Governor Jay Inslee has announced that he will drop out of the 2020 presidential race just two weeks before a CNN climate change debate that was scheduled largely at his insistence, Breitbart News reported.
Inslee announced his departure from the 2020 race on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show Wednesday evening. “This show has been so good to me, this is sort of the book ends of my campaign,” Inslee said to Maddow.
“It’s become clear that I’m not going to be carrying the ball, I’m not going to be president. So I’m withdrawing, tonight, from the race. But I have to tell you, look — I’ve been fighting climate change for 25 years, and I’ve never been so confident of the ability of America now to reach critical mass, to move the ball,” he continued.
The Democrat governor said he felt he had succeeded in making climate change a more primary issue in the race and was proud that his plan was called the “gold standard” by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the author of the Green New Deal. It is ironic, though, that he will not get to participate in the climate change debate he pushed so hard for.
Inslee had hinted Tuesday night on Twitter that he might drop out of the race by posting a retrospective of his campaign in a series of tweets.
