Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has reportedly separated from her husband Ahmed Hirsi and moved into a penthouse apartment in Minneapolis. Hirsi and Omar share three children even though she was married to another man, Ahmed El Emri, until 2017.
Omar refused to comment on the separation and whether it is related to recent complaints against her that allege she married Emri for immigration reasons and that he may be her brother. Omar is also under fire for filing joint taxes with Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 when she was still married to Emri.
Reports are saying it will be the second divorce for Hirsi and Omar, but their first marriage in 2002 was “in the faith” and not a legal one in the U.S.
Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board has already ruled that Omar violated campaign laws more than once by using campaign funds for personal expenses while serving in the state legislature.
Community leaders are beginning to turn against Omar, with one reportedly saying, ““Obviously we are proud that a Somali-American has been elected — but we just think it is the wrong Somali-American.”
