Legendary South Carolina Democrat Ernest “Fritz” Hollings, who served 38 years in the Senate, died Saturday of natural causes.
Fellow Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to former Vice President Joe Biden, expressed sorrow at Hollings’ passing.
“Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Fritz Hollings: a giant of the Senate, a hero of South Carolina and a beloved statesman of great courage and conviction,” Pelosi tweeted.
“We’re not only seatmates. We’re soulmates, and we’re friends,” said Biden, who credited Hollings with boosting his early political career.
South Carolina Republicans also issued glowing praise for the 97-year-old former senator, who hailed from a different era in Democratic politics.
“Until his dying day, Fritz Hollings was always advocating and urging for policies that would make our country strong,” said Sen. Lidsey Graham.
