Democrats faced the embarrassment of a new scandal on Friday as New York police charged a congressional staffer with soliciting an underage prostitute.
John Stemen, who worked as a field representative for Rep. Anthony Brindisi (D-N.Y.), allegedly met a 17-year-old girl online and paid her $200 for sex.
In response to the charges, Brindisi fired 57-year-old Stemen.
“As soon as we were made aware of the charges, Joh Stemen was immediately terminated from his position,” Brindisi said.
Brindisi is a first-term congressman, but has had a professional relationship with Stemen going back to his previous position on the New York State Assembly.
While the charge against Stemen may be politically damaging for Brindisi, the offense is only a Class A misdemeanor in the state of New York.
