A top Democrat is facing criminal charges after a conspiracy was exposed.
Senator Thomas Cullerton faces 41 counts for illegally receiving $188,000 in salary while allegedly performing no work for the big consortium of labor union chapters that employed him.
He also received $64,000 in health and pension contributions and bonuses.
Cullerton could face up to 5 years in prison if convicted of embezzlement. And conviction looks very possible. The alleged conspiracy went on with the knowledge of at least one of his superiors, who is now cooperating with investigators and has pleaded guilty in court.
Cullerton will be one of 7 state senators to be charged with embezzlement in the last decade.
