The Utah State Supreme Court suspended a state judge for repeatedly criticizing President Trump in public.
Judge Michael Kwan was found in violation of the judicial code of conduct after posting online about Trump’s “inability to govern and political incompetence.”
“Judge Kwan’s behavior denigrates his reputation as an impartial, independent, dignified, and courteous jurist who takes no advantage of the office in which he serves,” said Utah State Supreme Court Justice John A. Pearce.
For his indiscretion, Kwan was suspended without pay for six months.
Kwan argued that his criticisms were constitutionally protected speech.
However, a lawyer representing Kwan conceded, “He certainly regrets making those statements and is committed to not doing anything like that again.”
