A shocking plot was just uncovered, and 14 million people could die. The Department of Justice (DOJ) and local law enforcement have already made arrests.
During a major operation known as Operation Cookout, 35 people were arrested on drug possession and distribution charges. U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger said that the accused had “enough fentanyl to kill over 14 million people.”
In total, law enforcement “seized 24 firearms, 30 kilograms of fentanyl, 30 kilograms of heroin, 5 kilograms of cocaine, and over $700,000 in cash during the three-day takedown,” according to the DOJ.
However, there has been a particular focus on fentanyl recently, given the outbreak in overdoses that have occurred and its decidedly lethal composition — especially when manufactured illegally.
The CDC notes that fentanyl is “50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.” When used properly, it can relieve severe pain, however, “most recent cases of fentanyl-related harm, overdose, and death in the U.S. are linked to illegally made fentanyl.”
It should be no surprise that the suspects allegedly purchased some of the drugs from Mexico. A report noted that drugs were also purchased from California and New York, then they were trafficked into Virginia.
