The U.S. Senate just voted ‘yes’ in a 90 to 8 landslide victory for President Trump. He is smiling and Americans should be very proud, but some Democrats still tried to cause problems.
Mark Esper, Trump’s nominee to succeed former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, has been easily confirmed by the Senate. The Democrats who voted ‘no’ included Sens. Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren.
It is no surprise that most of the Democratic presidential candiates voted against Esper, however, their grandstanding made little difference, and Trump soon capped off the ocassion with a swearing-in ceremony at the White House for Esper.
“There is no one more qualified to lead the Department of Defense than Mark Esper,” said Trump in his remarks. “A West Point graduate — great student, actually — Secretary Esper served our military for 21 years, including in the Gulf War.”
Trump continued: “He also advanced U.S. national security in government and in private sector, most recently as Secretary of the Army, where he played a critical role training and equipping our armed forces.”
Trump noted that Esper was a recipient of the distinguished “Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge,” a true honor. Esper thanked Trump for this “incredible opportunity” and said “it is the honor of a lifetime … to lead the greatest military in history.”
