A bill to make Washington, DC the 51st state was brought up by House Democrats. However, this bill will be dead on arrival in the Senate.
The quest to make DC the 51st state hasn’t seen any traction since the ’90s. It’s a political hot potato for many reasons.
The measure failed before and has stayed on the fringe of political thought because of its ability to disrupt electoral politics.
Such a small issue isn’t free from insane hyperbole. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has drawn a ridiculous parallel between DC statehood and slavery.
“DC was the 1st territory in the United States to free the enslaved. It’s where Black Americans fled the tyranny of slavery & towards greater freedom, to DC. Yet today it’s where 2nd class citizenship reigns, and the right to vote is denied,” she said.
It’s unclear what she was referring to since citizens in Washington, D.C. have the right to vote like every other citizen. She appeared to be complaining about the fact that D.C. congressmen and congresswomen can’t vote in the House of Representatives. DC residents also do not have any representation in the Senate.
In the end, Trump and the Republicans will uphold precedent and DC will not be a state.
