GOP consultant Mike Murphy said Wednesday that a Republican senator told him that 30 Republican senators would vote to impeach Trump if the vote were secret, Newsweek reported.
“The politics of it will get worse and worse for Trump,” Murphy said. He has previously been critical of Trump, however, and called for Trump’s impeachment in a Tuesday Washington Post op-ed.
Keep in mind that on Tuesday, the phone call and whistleblower complaint on which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s impeachment inquiry was based had not yet been seen by anyone in Congress, or by Murphy, either.
A proper impeachment inquiry requires a vote by the entire House, which has not yet occurred. This has led critics of Pelosi and Democrats to say that she is posturing before she even has enough information to make a good decision.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) has called the allegations “troubling” and said they should be investigated.
