Rep. Justin Amash (L-IL), the Republican-turned Libertarian who voted to impeach President Donald Trump, announced Thursday that he would not be seeking re-election or running for any kind of office in November.
“I love representing our community in Congress,” Amash tweeted after his adviser broke the news to the press. “I always will. This is my choice, but I’m still going to miss it. Thank you for your trust.”
The Detroit News noted that Amash’s campaign only raised $24,200 for the quarter ending June 30 when he previously raised over $1.1 million for a re-election bid.
Amash had said he was exploring a run for the presidency on the Libertarian ticket, but he later backed off from that run as well.
It seems clear that his defection from the Trump Train has not treated him well at all.
