Pope Francis is now urging church officials from around the world to “hear the cries” of children abused by pedophile priests.
Francis was speaking this past Thursday at the Vatican to a group of church leaders gathered there for a conference. The purpose of the conference is to educate those leaders on their responsibilities when it comes to preventing and reporting sexual abuse.
The summit used strong language: at one point, a Cardinal from Columbia reminded gathered leaders that they themselves could be subject to imprisonment if they let the abuse continue.
For some, this may be a case of too little, too late: the child sex scandal inside the church hit Europe three decades ago and has been public in the United States for 20 years. Many allege that the church has not done enough to stop these sexual offenders.
But the language of this summit, at least, seems to show that at least some in the church are beginning to take the scandal seriously.
