Vice President Mike Pence addressed the controversy surrounding the National Basketball Association and its response to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s tweet in support of the Hong Kong protesters.
“Nike promotes itself as a so-called ‘social -justice champion,’ but when it comes to Hong Kong, it prefers checking its social conscience at the door,” Pence said in a speech.
NBA basketball is huge in China, and it seems the NBA made a decision not to offend its Chinese fans and the Chinese government by allowing Morey’s tweet to stand.
“In siding with the Chinese Communist Party and silencing free speech, the NBA is acting like a wholly-owned subsidiary of the authoritarian regime,” Pence said in criticizing that decision.
Pence said that the American people support the Hong Kong protesters: “We stand with you, we are inspired by you. We urge you to stay on the path of non-violent protest.”
