Federal workers weathering the longest government shutdown in U.S. history have a new source of motivation—a solemn promise from Vice President Mike Pence.
While praising Border Patrol agents for their perseverance, Pence placed himself on record as assuring them the standoff will be resolved and employees will get their back pay.
“Thank you for staying focused on this mission, even in trying times,” Mr. Pence told them. “Focus on the mission. I want to assure you that we’re going to figure this thing out.”
Unfortunately, with both President Trump and congressional Democrats holding firm, and with the nation sharply divided between those who want effective border security and those who consider even the most basic enforcement of immigration laws to be racist and inhumane, there’s no telling how long a wait it will be.
