Vice President Mike Pence reinforced rumors of rising anti-Semitism in the Middle East Friday as he took Iran to task for a Nazi-like climate of hate.
Fresh from a visit to the historic Auschwitz concentration camp, Pence accused Iran of “breathing out murderous threats, with the same vile anti-Semitic hatred that animated the Nazis in Europe.”
Pence’s condemnation comes on the heels of a statement from Iranian Brigadier General Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, that Iran is planning to wipe “the Zionist regime” off the map. This inhospitable climate has caused Iran’s Jewish population to plummet from 85,000 to an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Pence is seeking to politically isolate the Islamist regime as the U.S. reimposes sanctions that were lifted by President Obama’s 2015 accord, which sought to curb Iran’s nuclear program but lacked the teeth to substantially deter weapons development.
