Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi just said ‘no,’ and Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is furious. The two politicians may be headed for a collision course after this revelation.
According to reports, Pelosi is still refusing to hold a formal vote in the House on whether to open an impeachment inquiry on President Trump. Ocasio-Cortez had previously demanded that such a vote take place soon.
Of course, in her political ignorance, it would be “to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment of this president,” when, in fact, voting on an inquiry is far more perilous for Democrats.
Pelosi knows that an official vote could damage congressional Democrats in swing states during the upcoming election — and she doesn’t want to lose her majority in the House.
However, Democrats are likely heading for defeat regardless. The impeachment inquiry they are pushing without a vote goes against House precedent and could even by unconstitutional since the entire House is supposed to be involved.
Article 1, section 2, of the Constitution, clearly states that the House of Representatives “shall have the sole Power of Impeachment,” and this means all of the people’s representatives, not just a handful of politicians or one party.
