Not only did special counsel Robert Mueller’s report fail to provide the smoking gun that Democrats were looking for — it also dragged public support for impeachment to a new low.
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll revealed that only 37 percent of respondents favored impeaching President Trump.
That number is down three points from January, and more than 10 points from August, when nearly half of respondents supported impeachment.
Much of the decline took place among independents, illustrating that while Democrats’ rhetoric may be winning points among their base, the rest of the country isn’t buying their anti-Trump smear.
However, 47 percent believed Trump committed obstruction of justice, which the left has shifted focus to now that the Russia collusion claim has been largely debunked.
Nevertheless, the unpopularity of impeachment is bad news for Democrats such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who are staking their reputations on their continuing demands for Trump’s ouster.
