Newly released emails obtained by Judicial Watch show that figures closely associated with Christopher Steele set up a meeting in September 2016 to discuss “a Russian matter.”
Then-Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Special Coordinator for Libya Jonathan Winer arranged the meeting, but whether they actually discussed the largely falsified Steele dossier is unknown. Winer did say in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed that he discussed the dossier with Steele in September 2016 and that a “two-page summary” was shared with Nuland.
Both Nuland and Winer thought that Hillary Clinton needed to know about the dossier. Judicial Watch also released documents showing that Obama officials were still using unsecured Blackberry devices to send classified emails in 2018, more than a year after the Hillary Clinton email scandal broke.
While the information about the meeting doesn’t prove guilt, it does raise important questions about senior officials in the Obama administration and how their conduct may have interfered with the presidential election.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said, “The Obama State Department was central to the effort to target President Trump with the Russia smear. These new emails further show that senior Obama State Department advanced the Russiagate hoax just before the 2016 presidential election.”
