First, it was revealed that Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff, Tina Tchen, was texting with Chicago state attorney Kim Foxx about the Jussie Smollett case. Now the scandal just got even bigger and the Obamas are panicking.
Apparently, Smollett’s relationship with the Obama family is much closer than originally thought, with evidence going viral of a raucous party where Michelle Obama and Smollett danced together. He has also made at least one high-profile visit to the White House.
In February of last year, Smollett tweeted a photo of him with Barack and Michelle Obama from what appears to be the Oval Office. “With my big bro JoJo, @MichelleObama and @BarackObama back when the White House was the Kingdom of Wakanda,” wrote.
Wakanda is the fictional country featured in Marvel Studios’ box-office hit, Black Panther. Smollett is no stranger to using race as a political wedge issue, so, in hindsight, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he eventually stepped it way up.
But when your friends with the Obamas, it seems you get to escape accountability. Even Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a longtime Obama ally, can’t believe Smollett’s charges were dropped like nothing ever happened.
“[Smollett] did this all in the name of self-promotion,” said Emanuel. Eddie Johnson, Chicago’s police superintendent, echoed the mayor’s sentiment. “At the end of the day, it is Mr. Smollett who committed this hoax, period,” said Johnson.
“If he wanted to clear his name, the way to do that is in a court of law so everyone can see the evidence. I stand by the facts of what we produced,” Johnson continued, expressing the concern of Chicago’s law enforcement community.
