At the Essence Festival on Saturday, Michelle Obama didn’t defend her husband’s vice president and current Democrat presidential frontrunner Joe Biden following a backlash over comments he made about how he “got along with” segregationist senators with whom he did not agree in the 1970s.
Festival moderator Gayle King asked about the recent attacks by fellow presidental candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on Biden, but Obama said she “did not” have any comments on Biden or Harris.
“I’ve been doing this rodeo far too long,” the former first lady said. “And no comment.” Obama said she and her husband plan to endorse the primary winner and would not make an endorsement before that point.
The same day, Biden apologized for the comments at one of his campaign stops. But Obama’s comments have to be weighing on him.
At the very least, they are a sure sign that the Obamas are not committed to Joe in 2020.
