The NYT reported that President Trump directed McAleenan to close the border illegally, and offered McAleenan pardon if he ran into “legal problems” as a result.
The report was based on unnamed sources, and offered no further evidence to support the claim.
President Trump was understandably infuriated by the claims, and fired back that “The New York Times Sanctuary Cities/Immigration story today was knowingly wrong on almost every fact.”
Trump also explained that the alleged pardon conversation never took place, and that it is his right as president to close the border if neccessary. Trump boldly predicted that the paper will be out of business in 6 years due to their willingness to “lie & cheat anyway possible to make me look bad.”
