Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who presided over the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton, pointed to two main reasons why current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) moved forward with impeachment even though it wasn’t bipartisan.
First, Gingrich pointed to increasing pressure from the party’s base that she believed could have led to a backlash against her if she didn’t at least try to impeach President Donald Trump.
Second, he said he thought Pelosi and the Democrats were trying to damage Trump’s re-election chances for 2020, giving the Democrat candidate a chance to win.
In most cases, this strategy might have worked, but Gingrich said he thought it actually vaccinated Trump against opposition and made him stronger.
Once again, Democrats overplayed their hand and it came back to bite them. Karma, I guess.
