Former special counsel Robert Mueller recently delivered a dismal and lackluster performance before a pair of House committees about his investigation’s final report that should have ended all talk of impeachment among anyone with common sense and objectivity.
Yet, a number of top Democrats in the House are still clamoring to begin impeachment proceedings, most notably Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, who serves as chair of the House Judiciary Committee where the impeachment process would have to begin.
But acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, in an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” suggested that the only reason Nadler was still pushing for impeachment was to guard against a potential primary challenge from the Trump-hating, impeachment-obsessed, far-left base of his party.
Pointing to how outspoken progressive New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had successfully defeated former top House Democrat Joe Crowley in 2018, Mulvaney said of Nadler, “He is falling over himself to become more and more progressive, in order to try and keep his job and not lose to the next AOC.”
That “next AOC” that Nadler was worried about is a progressive candidate named Lindsey Boylan who has loudly demanded the president’s impeachment and is seeking to unseat Nadler in 2020.
Rep. Nadler is a career politician who is smart enough to know that there never was any real basis to support an impeachment effort against Trump, but so long as his rabid base of progressive socialists demands it — and he feels under pressure to deliver or be ousted — he will ludicrously continue to press the effort.
