Michael Bloomberg said in 2011 that the U.S. should deny healthcare to the elderly, especially if they have chronic disease.
“If you show up with prostate cancer and you’re 95, we should say ‘go and enjoy, have a nice day, live a long life.’ There’s no cure and we can’t do anything. If you’re a young person, we should do something about it,” said Bloomberg, a former New York City mayor.
Bloomberg said that the country is not yet willing to go along with denying treatment to the elderly and that it would “bankrupt us” as a country.
The comments came to light after Bloomberg released his own health care insurance plan, which would among other things limit out-of-pocket drug costs.
Bloomberg’s age-ist comments are sure to add to the considerable controversy already dogging his campaign.
