President Donald Trump will hold his first-ever rally in the blue state of New Jersey at the end of the month. Trump’s rally will be to support the re-election efforts of Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who recently changed parties and became a Republican after voting against two articles of impeachment in the House.
Van Drew was one of only three Democrats in the House that didn’t vote to impeach the president. He represents a Republican majority district and was elected as a Democrat with a seven-point margin in 2018.
In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state by 14 points, but Van Drew’s district voted for the Republican representative there by 22 points.
“President Trump supports Rep. Van Drew and endorses his re-election efforts,” Principal Deputy Communications Director Erin Perrine said in a statement to Breitbart News.
Van Drew has said that the Republican Party just seems like a “better fit” for him, and that he sees the tolerance for moderate Democrat views going away in the current political climate.
